Authority records
#
- The most common way of enforcing authority control in a bibliographic catalog is to set up a separate index of authority records, which relates to and governs the headings used in the main catalog. This separate index is often referred to as an "authority file." It contains an indexable record of all decisions made by catalogers in a given library (or -- as is increasingly the case -- cataloguing consortium), which catalogers consult when making, or revising, decisions about headings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authority_control (added by CALYX information essentials 20090514)

Controlled vocabulary
#
- A limited set of terms or notations in a thesaurus or classification that must be used both for indexing and searching. In a controlled vocabulary consisting of terms taken from a natural language the use of synomyms and homonyms is avoided for terms recommended for use in indexing. In most cases some structure is imposed on the terms and notations so that those whose meanings are related are linked in some way. (Added by CALYX information essentials 20090514)

Folksonomies
#
- Folksonomies are informal lists of keywords created by users of content-sharing Web sites, such as del.icio.us (for bookmarks) and Flickr (for photos). Unlike controlled vocabularies, which consist of preferred and variant terms created by professional indexers, folksonomies contain current terms used by real people to categorize their own stuff. The real power of folksonomies lies in sharing lists of categories among users and applying them in search and discovery applications. Ideally, they are integrated with traditional metadata structures, such as thesauri. http://www.montague.com/roundtable38.html (Added by CALYX information essentials 20090514)
