Choosing a Printer

This How-to applies to: 3.0, 3.1, 3.2

Recommendations for printers (receipt, page, and label).

This is list is compiled from information found on webpages and mailing lists.

TIP: If you cannot print to the printer from a basic application (like notepad), then Koha will be unable to print to it as well.  Koha is a web-based application and by definition does not know anything about your local printer configuration.  Instead, Koha relies on the web browser to communicate with the printer.  Some features, like dual-color ribbons and tape-cutters will not work with Koha because the necessary control characters cannot be sent via web browser.  By the same token, some impact printers may not be able to support Koha's Unicode output.

Printers

  • POS-X receipt printer
  • Star Micronics printer (exact model unknown) with a generic/plain text driver.
  • Star SP2000 (Nelsonville)
  • Star TSP-100 futurePRINT (Geauga)
    • "I know there have been a lot of questions on receipt printers so I thought I'd pass on my findings. We have been testing the Star TSP-100 futurePRINT. I found this print to be VERY easy to configure for Koha. I was even able to customize the print job by adding our system logo (a .gif) to the top of every receipt. Also with a bitmap created in Paint was able to add a message at the bottom of each receipt with the contact information, hours and website for the library that the materials were checked out at."
  • Epson TM 88 IIIP thermal receipt printers
  • Epson TM-T88IV
  • 1x1 labels using a Dymolabelwriter printer

TIP: Users may want to enable their browser to print without a confirmation window.

Printing Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing 'printer problems' in Koha here is a test you can try:

  • Load the following sample receipt into your browser (just click the link).
  • Print the page through the browser (try ctl-P).

If you encounter any problems with the printed receipt, you'll need to adjust the print settings in your browser or operating system.  If this sample doesn't print correctly, Koha's printed output will suffer the same problems.
